Route Information
• Distance: Approximately 8 kilometers
• Elevation Gain: Around 850 meters
• Highest Point: 1,734 meters (Jebel Rum summit)
• Difficulty: Scrambling Grade 3
• Duration: 6–8 hours
The route follows traditional Bedouin paths that have been used for generations. Along the way, you experience silence, vast desert panoramas, and breathtaking views over the entire Wadi Rum Protected Area.
Approach & Start
Your adventure begins with a short 4×4 transfer from Wadi Rum Village to the base of Jebel Rum. From there, you follow sandy gullies and wide desert paths as a gentle warm-up before reaching the first rock sections.
This gradual start allows your body to adjust before the real scrambling begins.
Early Scrambling Section
The first rock sections combine steady walking with easy scrambling over solid sandstone. These sections help you build confidence and get used to hands-on movement in a safe and controlled way.
The Tight Passage
You then reach a narrow natural passage where you climb using both hands and feet. This section is simple yet exciting, offering a fun introduction to traditional desert scrambling techniques.
It is tourist-friendly but still adventurous enough to make the experience memorable.
Ledge Traverse
A long natural sandstone ledge guides you across the mountain face. From here, the views open dramatically across the Wadi Rum valley, revealing vast desert landscapes, rock formations, and distant mountains.
This is one of the most scenic parts of the entire ascent.
Summit of Jebel Rum
Reaching the summit of Jebel Rum is a true achievement. At 1,734 meters, you stand on the highest peak in Wadi Rum and one of the most iconic mountains in Jordan.
After rest, photos, and enjoying the silence of the desert, you begin your descent following either the same classic Bedouin route or a more adventurous variation depending on conditions and group preference.
Final Slabs to the Summit
The last part of the ascent follows gently angled sandstone slabs leading up to the summit plateau. This final stretch is exciting, scenic, and very rewarding.
Summit Experience
At the top, you can enjoy panoramic views over the whole Wadi Rum desert. A relaxing break, a light lunch, and freshly made Bedouin tea are served before beginning the descent.
Descent Route
For the descent, you have two options: follow the same Bedouin path you used on the way up for a simple and direct return, or choose a more adventurous east-side descent toward Wadi Rum Village, which includes five short rope abseils and unforgettable views. Once you reach the base of the mountain, a jeep will be waiting to take you back to the village.
Optional Add-On
You can extend your experience by spending the night in our traditional Bedouin camp—or choose a more adventurous option and sleep in our natural desert cave under the stars.
If you stay overnight, you can enjoy the jeep tour the next day at a relaxed pace.
And if you arrive late on the first day, no problem—you can spend the night at our desert camp and start the Jebel Rum scrambling early the following morning.
